Today, May 22, is Walk Safely to School Day, a national initiative in Australia, now in its 27th year, organized by the Pedestrian Council of Australia.
It encourages primary school-aged children to walk to school with a parent or caregiver.
The event highlights multiple benefits:
Health: Walking contributes to the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity for children, supporting healthy growth, strong bones and muscles, cardiovascular fitness, and overall wellbeing.
Road Safety: Children learn safe pedestrian behavior, including holding an adult’s hand when crossing roads, and schools often incorporate discussions or activities about safe road use.
Environment: Walking reduces traffic congestion and air pollution around schools, promoting a cleaner environment.
Community Engagement: Walking together fosters a sense of community and wellbeing, allowing children to interact with peers and families in a fun, active way.
