There’s growing calls for the Victorian Government to dump plans for a new tax on truck freight at the Port of Melbourne.
Mildura Rural City Council has joined the call, saying the next tax will hit local growers and the broader community.
Mayor Liam Wood says the region’s relies heavily on road transport, given there’s still the need for major upgrades to the rail network including the incomplete Murray Basin Rail Project.
He says a tax would mean increasing costs for local transport operators, who’ll pass that on to growers and businesses.
The Mayor says Council would continue to advocate strongly to all levels of government to reduce the tax burden on regional areas, including through its membership with the Murray River Group of Councils and Regional Cities Victoria.
