Mildura Rural City Council have taken to social media to spread the word on battery safety in the home.
Council says batteries have become essential to modern, everyday life.
From phones and e-scooters to power banks and power tools, batteries are found throughout the home.
Fire Rescue Victoria and other state fire agencies report that lithium-ion battery fires are now a common call-out across the state, with fire crews attending nearly one lithium-ion battery fire every day.
Here are some battery safety tips to help reduce the risk of house and bin fires:
Keep batteries away from heat and direct sunlight
Never use swollen, leaking or damaged batteries
Avoid overcharging – remove batteries from chargers once fully charged
Never charge phones or electronic devices on beds, under blankets, or directly on carpeted floors
Avoid letting batteries fully discharge; consider recharging when battery levels reach around 20% to 25%
Periodically check batteries that are used less frequently or stored long-term
Never place batteries in household bins – use approved battery recycling drop-off points.
