Varroa mite has been detected for the first time in Victoria.

Agriculture Victoria says the infested hive was identified at Nangiloc during surveillance during the almond pollination season, and it’s now working with the affected beekeeper.

The government department says the early detection enables beekeepers to prepare and manage hives effectively.

Twelve Varroa development officers have been recruited in Victoria to provide guidance to keepers.

The parasite weakens and kills honey bee colonies, but can also transmit viruses.

It does NOT affect native bees.

Member for Mildura Jade Benham has spoken to the Agriculture Minister and says she’s optimistic it’ll be contained.
