People in far west New South Wales who have experienced sexual violence will soon be able to get clear information and ongoing support close to home, through a new service being established by Mallee Family Care.
The Sexual Violence Justice System Navigator is a new role covering the Wentworth, Broken Hill, Central Darling and Balranald local government areas.
The navigator will be based at Mallee Family Care’s Dareton office, supporting communities across the catchment and providing tele-support for people in remote locations. Recruitment for the position is open now.
The service is for people aged 16 and over who have experienced sexual violence, whether recently or in the past, including in childhood.
People do not need to have reported to police to use the service, and are never required to.
The navigator provides information and support, not legal advice or counselling.
That means plain explanations of reporting options, rights, court processes and financial support through the NSW Victims Support Scheme, help to find and reach other services, and continuing support through police investigation and court for people who choose to pursue a criminal matter.
