National Child Health Poll released

The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) has released its 41st National Child Health Poll, lifting the (lunch box) lid on what Australian teenagers and parents really know about food, nutrition and mealtimes.

Based on a survey of 1,595 young people aged 12–17 years and more than 2,285 parents, the poll uncovered a striking disconnect.

• Hungry to learn: Two in five teens (41%) cannot cook a basic meal but most (65%) want to learn how.

• What pyramid? More than 90% of teens and parents don’t know the Australian dietary guidelines for serves of vegetables, proteins, grains or dairy.

• Beliefs and misbeliefs: Half (54%) of teens mistakenly believe high-protein diets are better for teen health, while one in four (23%) believe the same for low-carbohydrate diets.
