The Front End Recycling Facility (FERF) at the Buronga Landfill is now operational.
The facility opened last week as part of the ongoing landfill upgrade project.
The FERF allows site visitors to deposit specific recyclable and reusable items prior to entering the weighbridge.
This process diverts recoverable materials from the landfill and provides residents with the opportunity to reduce their waste disposal fees by removing free-to-deposit items from their chargeable load.
Materials accepted at the FERF prior to the weighbridge include cardboard, co-mingle recycling, scrap metal, waste oil, Drum Muster containers, and approved reusables.
The site also features a Community Recycling Centre, provided in partnership with the Environment Protection Authority.
The Community Recycling Centre accepts problem household wastes, including fluorescent bulbs, water-based and oil-based paints, household and car batteries, fire extinguishers, gas bottles, aerosol cans, and non-motor oils.
Reusable items recovered at the facility are stored for the Round Again programme.
Items deposited for Round Again must be in clean and working order.
Accepted items range from furniture that is not broken, stained or torn to building materials and garden items.
Certain items are strictly prohibited for safety and hygiene reasons, such as children’s car seats, mattresses, and safety helmets.
Residents are encouraged to sort their loads prior to visiting the Buronga Landfill to take full advantage of the facility.
