Blue-green algae red alerts lifted at 3 Lower Darling sites

July 1, 2024 7:36 am in by

The red alert warnings for high levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae have been lifted at three key sites on the Lower Darling River: Tapio, Upstream Pomona, and Pomona at Boat Ramp.

All three sites are now on Green alert.

The red alerts were originally issued in late February/March 2024.

The alerts were lifted following two consecutive laboratory algal reports which indicates that the sites were no longer on red alert for blue-green algae.

While on Green Alert, the water is generally considered to be suitable for water sports, but water users are advised to exercise caution.

Boiling the water does not inactivate algal toxins.

The water should be considered unsuitable for potable use and alternative supplies or prior treatment of raw water for domestic purposes should be considered.

As algal numbers can change dramatically with changes in conditions, water users should avoid water which is discoloured or gives off an earthy or musty odour.

Water users should use personal discretion at all times before entering a water body and be aware that the algal situation can change quickly.

WaterNSW will continue routine water quality monitoring and advise of any change as new results are received.
