Winter warning for drivers ahead of King’s birthday long weekend

Victoria Police is urging motorists to take extra care on the roads as wet and wintery conditions are expected over the King’s Birthday long weekend.

The warning comes as Victoria Police launches Operation Regal, a four-day road safety blitz with a strong police presence and enforcement across the state aimed at reducing road trauma.

With winter officially getting underway this week, police are urging motorists to take extra care and pay attention behind the wheel, particularly with reduced daylight hours and wet weather impacting road visibility and conditions.

Police will be focused on speeding, distraction and impaired driving this King’s Birthday long weekend, which has been identified as a high-risk period on Victoria’s roads.

Operation Regal started at 12:01am this morning, Friday 6 June, and ends at 11:59pm on Monday 8 June 2026.

NSW Police officers will also be deployed across the state to target speeding and dangerous driving as part of a major traffic operation during the June long weekend.

Operation King’s Birthday 2026, will be conducted from 12.01am this morning, Friday 5 June 2026 to 11.59pm Monday 8 June 2026.

Double demerits will be in place in NSW for speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelt and helmet offences during the King’s Birthday long weekend.
