Drivers in Sunraysia are being urged to stay alert as new figures reveal the Sturt Highway and the Silver City Highway are some of the worst locations for animal collisions.
The latest claims data from NRMA Insurance shows more than 15,000 animals were hit on the nation’s roads over the past year; a 21% increase on 2024.
Kangaroos are the most likely animal to come to grief, accounting for 84% of collisions.
Executive Manager for Claims, Nick Kirkovski, says a combination of seasonal conditions and Easter holiday travel means local drivers need to stay vigilant.
NRMA Insurance recommends the following steps to reduce the risk of animal collisions:
• Avoid driving at dawn, dusk, or night-time where possible as this is usually when
animals are most active, and lack of light makes it more difficult to see them.
• It’s important to have a good night’s sleep before a long drive and schedule regular
breaks, ideally a 15-minute break every two hours.
• Reduce your speed inside signposted wildlife areas.
• If you see an animal on or near the road, you should try to slowly brake and avoid
swerving.
• If you hit an animal, and it is safe to do so, you should check the animal’s welfare
and contact your local wildlife rescue service.
