Time to talk about new minimum age social media laws

October 20, 2025 8:50 am in by

Parents and young people across Mildura and the Mallee are being encouraged to learn more about new minimum age laws for social media.

The new laws come into effect from December 10 and will prevent young people under the age of 16 from creating or keeping a social media account.

Parenting expert, Doctor Justin Coulson, is encouraging local families to plan ahead and understand what the new laws will mean for them.

“When it comes to discussing the new laws and what they mean for families, I would encourage parents and carers to have really open, supportive conversations about online safety, digital wellbeing, and mostly about getting time in the real world. That’s what leads to healthier outcomes.”

A supporting campaign will help every parent, teacher and young person understand what’s changing, and how to make the most of it.
