Think before you tip ash

June 5, 2025 8:42 am in by

Mildura Rural City Council is urging the community to think before you tip your fireplace ash.

They have hit social media to warn that ash from your fireplace, wood stove, or barbecue might look harmless, but it can still hide live embers.

They say tossing it in your kerbside organics bin is a serious fire risk to collection trucks, landfill, community and your home.

To stay safe they say to let ash cool completely for at least seven days in a metal container before disposing of it properly.

They also have some tip for reusing you fireplace ash if it comes from clean, untreated wood:

Gardening & Lawns: Add nutrients like calcium and potassium to soil or lawns (in moderation)

Composting: Small amounts can enhance your compost

Cleaning: Great for cleaning fireplace glass or removing rust
