Safety is the focus on the roads this weekend

Police are pleading with motorists to slow down and be on the lookout for vulnerable road users this weekend.

Motorcyclist and pedestrian fatalities are higher than at the same time last year in the state of Victoria.

Victoria Police have attended 22 motorcyclist fatalities, 6 more than this time last year, and 12 pedestrian fatalities – double the figure at the same time last year.

Regional fatalities are overrepresented with nearly 60% of lives lost this year occurring on regional roads.

Excessive speed, unauthorised driving and impaired driving have all been factors in lives lost so far this year.

Police say that if you’re on the road over the next few days, please follow the rules and drive safely.

Operation Tribute in Victoria, and an operation in NSW with double demit points applying, will run until midnight Sunday 28 April.

Police say it is not about catching people and giving out fines, it is about making sure everyone gets home safe.
