Roads parliamentary inquiry proposal defeated

A proposal for a parliamentary inquiry into the state of Regional Victorian roads has been defeated in the state’s upper house.

Liberal MP Bev McArthur had put up the motion last week but said the crossbench refused to support what could’ve been one of the most important inquiries in the state.

And Mildura MP Jade Benham has been fighting for funding for the region’s roads, while shadow roads minister Danny O’Brien has had a look at the state of roads in Wycheproof recently.

The Victorian Farmers Federation also supported the public inquiry.

President Emma Germano said the condition of regional roads had reached “crisis point” with the cost to agriculture and country communities continuing to build.

One Nation MP Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell said she didn’t notice when she drove through last week’s earthquake.

“I simply assumed my rough ride was due to the state of our roads,” she said.

Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh last week said Victoria’s regional roads “will only decay further”, with maintenance funding slashed by 45 per cent since 2020.
