Mildura Police have taken to social media to tell locals that hate has no place in our community.
They say they take all reports seriously, including hate motivated crime and incidents.
A hate crime is a criminal offence motivated by hate or prejudice.
It can include assault, threats or intimidation, or property damage towards a person or group because of their identity or perceived difference.
Police say a hate incident is not a crime, but is an action – like verbal abuse, offensive comments or online hate, and that is still harmful.
Both can have a real impact on individuals and community.
Mildura Police say if you witness or experience hate, you can report it, even if you are unsure.
In an emergency or life-threatening situation, always call Triple Zero (000).
If it is non-urgent, contact or visit your local police station.
Submit an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au).
