Operation Harvest, running from Thursday 7 through to Saturday 9 November, aimed to influence driver behaviour and performance, to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Victorian roads during harvest season.
Victoria Police are reminding road users that trucks come in all shapes and sizes and handle differently from cars.
To safely travel on the road with trucks, drivers need to be aware of their visibility, stopping distances and safe methods for overtaking heavy vehicles.
More than half of lives lost have been on country roads.
An oversize load is anything more than 2.5 metres wide and can take up more than half the road. That’s why they’re often accompanied by pilot or escort vehicles.
Police say if you happen to be following behind an oversize load, remember to slow down, keep a safe following distance and wait for directions, only overtake when signalled and never overtake the pilot or escort driver behind the load.
The number one rule is not to panic.
