The Merbein Library now has even more opportunities for the community to experience the wonderful world of books, information and reading following the official opening of a new upgraded courtyard.

The new outdoor space was created to provide more opportunities for the community to use the library, including everything from children’s activities and Storytime sessions through to a quiet outdoor space for adults to immerse themselves in their favourite book.

Councillor for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Healy said the upgraded courtyard was very much a collaborative project.

“This really is a community success story, showing what can be achieved by the community, Local Government and State Government working together,” Cr Healy said.

The Merbein Development Association successfully applied for funding through Council’s Community Plan Support Grant Program, and that, combined with $30,000 from the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program and $19,500 in Council funding, has resulted in an even better outdoor courtyard space for the community to enjoy.

Other elements of the project include a permanent shade structure, instant turf complete with children’s games painted on it, new tables and chairs and play equipment built by Sunraysia Men’s Shed members.

The project has been capped off by a colourful mural painted by well-known Merbein artist Terry McGowan.

The project also included a new storage shed and additional fencing.
