A man has been charged following a pursuit in Broken Hill last week.
About 3.45pm Wednesday, 4 February 2026, officers attached to Barrier Highway Patrol were conducting patrols of Mica Street, Broken Hill, when they allegedly observed a driver using a mobile phone in a Nissan utility.
When police activated all warning devices on Williams Street, the vehicle allegedly failed to stop, and a police pursuit commenced.
The pursuit continued throughout Broken Hill including on Chloride and Oxide Streets, with the ute allegedly reaching speeds of up to 120km/hr in a signposted 50km/hr zone.
Police allege that during an attempt to turn onto Murton Street at excessive speed, the vehicle tipped onto its roof.
Police immediately rendered aid to the driver, a 37-year-old man, before placing him under arrest, despite the man allegedly resisting officers.
He was taken to Broken Hill Police Station where he was then taken to Broken Hill Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The man was subjected to a blood test to detect any drugs or alcohol, the results of which are currently pending.
The man was charged with:
· Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously,
· Class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45 km/h – estimated,
· Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period,
· Use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road,
· Use uninsured motor vehicle on road,
· Use unsafe or unserviceable vehicle on road etc,
· Two counts of hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, and
· Driver use mobile phone when not permitted.
He was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 4 Thursday, 5 February 2026, where he was formally refused bail to face Broken Hill Local Court on Tuesday 17 February 2026.
