Don Cavallo from Merbein Football Netball Club has been announced by Bunnings as one of eight finalists in its Legend of the Tongs competition, a nationwide search to recognise the local volunteers who fire up the BBQ weekly at Aussie rules footy clubs.

Selected from over 900 club volunteer nominations across the 18 weeks of the 2025 AFL season, Don has won a trip for two to the AFL Footy Festival and Toyota AFL Grand Final 2025 where he will be in the running to be named ‘Legend of the Golden Tongs’ and win $25,000 in Bunnings products and materials for his club.

Known for his humour and infectious energy and always ready with a smile and a joke, Don has been a dedicated member of the club for over 50 years.

He first began volunteering at Merbein when his sons started Auskick, and he’s been an integral part of the club ever since.

Don is set to cook up his award-winning snag alongside the seven other finalists before the overall winner is crowned on Friday, 26 September by Legend of the Tongs Ambassador, former Richmond legend and BBQ connoisseur Matthew Richardson.

Bunnings Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Melissa O’Neill said Bunnings is proud to recognise the community legends who are the lifeblood of footy across Australia.
