All Local Governments along the route of the proposed passenger train to Mildura have come out in support of the proposal.
Central Goldfields Shire Council, Northern Grampians Shire Council, Buloke Shire, Yarriambiack Shire Council and Mildura Rural City Council have all voiced their support.
President of the Rail Revival Alliance, Noel Laidlaw said that it was very pleasing to see the local representatives supporting the reintroduction of passenger rail services.
“Trains are needed for the young, the elderly, those who can’t or won’t drive and people suffering from illness or a disability. Families with young children find rail travel much more convenient,” Mr. Laidlaw said.
“The bus service just does not cut the mustard, and air travel is far too expensive for many.
Air travel is not a reality for the smaller communities along the line.”
Mr Laidlaw said that this was the first time that he was aware of that all five councils have actively supported and advocated for the return of the train service in the run up to an election.
“2026 is a year of great turbulence in the local political scene. This is an ideal opportunity for the various parties to commit to the Restoration of passenger rail services on the Mildura line. The communities have been calling for this for a number of years. It’s now time for the politicians to listen and act,” Mr Laidlaw concluded.
