Australia’s largest garlic growers have launched world first research that could transform the global nutraceuticals market.
Mildura-based Australian Garlic Producers CEO Nick Diamantopoulos recently spoke at the world’s largest garlic conference in California, launching the peer reviewed research to the world.
30 years in the making, the multi-generational garlic growers have discovered a specific cultivar of Australian-grown garlic that boasts significant health benefits.
The local business says these findings represent one of the most significant scientific developments in the modern garlic industry and in the history of garlic.
New peer-reviewed research conducted at leading Australian research institutions has found that specific garlic cultivars possess significant antiviral properties in laboratory (in vitro) studies.
The findings have now been published in leading international scientific journals, adding weight to a growing body of evidence that garlic’s health properties are not the same across all varieties.
Mr. Diamantopoulos says, “These findings fundamentally change the way the world should think about garlic. For centuries garlic has been viewed as a broad natural remedy, however our research indicates that not all garlic is equal, especially when it comes down to health benefits.”

The research program draws on more than 30 years of cultivar collection, breeding and analysis, involving more than 300 garlic cultivars sourced from around the world and grown under controlled conditions.
This move could see rapid expansion for Australian Garlic into the US market, create jobs in regional Australia and transform the supplement market.
