King’s Birthday weekend traffic operations conclude

A king-size enforcement effort by police over the King’s Birthday long weekend has resulted in a staggering number of traffic offences detected.

In Victoria, Operation Regal saw police highly visible and targeting high-risk driving behaviour across the state’s roads, in an effort to reduce road trauma.

A total 7,221 traffic offences were detected over the four-day enforcement period – a 20 per cent increase on the same time last year.

There were 6,005 offences detected during Operation Regal in 2025.

The total 7,221 traffic offences detected during Operation Regal included:

  • 3,311 speeding offences
  • 491 disobey signs/signals
  • 390 disqualified/suspended/unlicenced drivers
  • 292 mobile phone offences
  • 249 drink driving offences from 115,993 preliminary breath tests
  • 144 drug driving offences from 2,778 roadside drug tests
  • 105 vehicle impounds
  • 87 seatbelt offences
  • 511 unregistered vehicles

Road Policing Assistant Commissioner, Mick Hermans said: “The reality is, we will only issue infringements when there is blatant non-compliance with the road rules.”

“We will continue to enforce against those who engage in any risk-taking driving behaviour, and we make no apologies for this.”

NSW Police had a high-visibility presence across the state for Operation King’s Birthday 2026, which was conducted from 12.01am Friday 5 June 2026 to 11.59pm Monday 8 June 2026.

A double demerit period targeting speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelt and helmet offences was also in place for the same time period.

Across the state, police conducted more than 248,378 breath tests, with 303 drink driving offences and conducted 8,288 drug tests with 788 drug driving offences detected.

Police issued 11,806 traffic infringement notices, including 3,890 for speed related offences, 455 for mobile phone usage, and 211 restraint offences.
