Informal vote figures up locally in last year’s state election

It’s been revealed there were more than three-thousand informal votes in the Mildura electorate during last year’s Victorian Election.

That works out to be 7.51% of the total votes.

That figure is up since the 2018 election 5.09%.

The state-wide average last State Election fell for the first time since 1996 to 5.53%.

Electoral Commissioner Sven Bluemmel says there seems to be a strong correlation between the number of candidates and the number of informal votes.

There were only five candidates locally in the 2018 election compared to eleven in 2022.

An informal vote is when a ballot paper is not filled out correctly or left blank.

National’s Member Jade Benham won the seat from Independent Ali Cupper last November.
