Former local forced to retire from AFL due to concussion

Collingwood player and former Merbein Magpie Josh Carmichael has been forced to medically retire from the AFL after dealing with concussion issues.

The Sunraysia export has become the fourth AFL player be forced out of the game this year to retire due to head knocks.

He’s been having concussion symptoms since copping a head knock in the VFL in May.

The 24-year-old, who has suffered three concussions in nine months, says his focus is on ensuring he lives a full and healthy life.

He’s played eight games since being picked up by Collingwood in the mid-season draft in 2022, following a stint with West Adelaide in the SANFL.
