The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is suspending fire permits in the Wentworth and Balranald Local Government Areas from 11:59pm Sunday 22nd of December 2024, through until 6:00am on Monday 13th January 2025.
Lower Western Zone District Manager Supt. Steve Walker said the annual decision to suspend fire permits is nothing new and has been made in order to help keep the local community safe from bush and grass fires over the festive period.
“During hot, dry and windy conditions, such as we are experiencing now, fires can start quickly and spread rapidly. Given the time of year, we want our members to enjoy this time with their family and friends, not to be out responding to fires across the district. It only takes one small error, and that error can lead to a major incident within our community” Supt. Walker said.
“While fire permits will be suspended, there are other ways to clean up and protect your property from the threat of fire. I’d encourage residents to undertake alternate mitigation works such as clearing leaves from their gutters, slashing border fences and removing flammable materials from around their homes”
Serious penalties, including fines and/or imprisonment, can and will apply for starting a fire without a permit during the Bush Fire Danger Period. Exemptions may be authorised in exceptional circumstances, such as public safety or essential business works.
