Fake 50s reported in the Riverland

May 20, 2024 6:41 am in by

Riverland Police are investigating two reports of counterfeit $50 notes being used as tender to purchase goods.

Between Wednesday 15 May and Friday 17 May, two counterfeit $50 notes were passed at two Riverland businesses.

These notes are clearly distinguishable as fakes as they are slightly smaller and a brighter yellow colour than a real note and there are no holographs on the Southern Cross.

However, in dark or busy places or with distracted customers, it is possible they could pass temporarily as genuine.

Police urge business owners and retail staff to be vigilant when receiving cash, and also urge consumers to take a little extra time to check their notes when making purchases and receiving change.
