Credit card security reminder for businesses

South Australian Police are reminding business owners to be vigilant when dealing with credit card transactions either in person, online or over the phone.

Police have recently received reports that some payments have been made with a stolen credit card.

Business owners are urged to create some safeguarding techniques to prevent this from happening.

To reduce the chances of your business becoming a victim of credit card fraud, police are asking business owners and managers to consider the following tips.

-Be alert for customers that act in an unusual manner, such as appearing flustered when answering questions or appearing to be in a hurry

-If the card holder is present check for alterations to the card

-Check the signature matches the name on the card

-Should anything create suspicion consider asking for further identification, such as photo ID

-If the card holder is not present consider contacting the bank’s Authorisations Centre to obtain authorisation
