Swan Hill Rural City Council has welcomed Transport for NSW’s release of the preferred options report for the Swan Hill Bridge replacement, and the recognition of the need for a temporary detour bridge during construction.
Council’s Mayor, Cr Stuart King said he acknowledges Transport for NSW’s work in collaboration with Victoria’s Department of Transport and Planning and supports the preferred option of a new bridge on the existing alignment.
“This solution will not only address the current bridge’s condition and high maintenance costs but will also improve safety, freight access, and pedestrian connections for the community.
“We are pleased to see that the community’s needs are being considered in the planning of this project. A temporary detour bridge is critical to maintaining access for residents, businesses, and emergency services during construction, avoiding long detours and minimising disruption,” Cr King said.
Council also welcomes confirmation that significant local landmarks – including the water tower, Federal Hotel, Swan Hill Swimming Pool, and Wamba Wamba Mission – will not be directly impacted by the alignment and new bridge structure.
Cr King said the release of this report represents an important step forward, but there are still many critical milestones ahead, including securing a Victorian Government funding commitment to ensure the project can progress efficiently.
“The biggest goal for the 2026 State election is to secure strong commitments from all political parties to fund Victoria’s estimated $100 million portion of a new Swan Hill Bridge.
