Cigarettes and tobacco seized near Broken Hill

Police have seized cigarettes worth almost $130,000 during a vehicle stop near Broken Hill.

Officers attached Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were patrolling the Barrier Highway about 10:00am on Friday, April 26th 2024, when they stopped the driver of a van for a random breath test.

Police will allege in court the van was laden with 14,400 cigarettes and 4.2kg of tobacco, which has a combined estimated value of almost $130,000.

The driver, a 54-year-old South Australian man, was arrested and taken to Broken Hill Police Station, later charged with two counts of goods in custody suspected of being unlawfully obtained.

He was issued a future court attendance notice to appear before Broken Hill Local Court in July.
