Mildura Rural City Council is reminding the community to never dispose of a battery in a bin.
Each year, 10,000 fires in waste trucks and facilities across the country are caused by improperly disposed batteries.
Up to 90% of a battery can be recycled, however they must be taken to special battery bins at supermarkets or recyclers.
For the safest disposal possible, the terminals of the batteries must be taped when dropping off to a battery recycling bin.
Improper disposal wastes resources, harms the environment and poses serious safety risks.
