Mildura MP Jade Benham is calling for councils to be given some slack, and not be hit with another tax from the Victorian Government.
She says councils already deliver a service to protect community health but they’re now being taxed for doing it, costing up to six thousand dollars each year.
She says immunisation rates are already high in smaller local government areas, but a tax could be another barrier for families struggling with the cost of living.
An inquiry into local councils is currently underway with regional councils already struggling to provide services without extreme rate rises to cover cost burdens.
“Instead of cutting corners and cost-shifting on to councils, the Allan Labor Government should be working with local governments to ensure immunisations are as accessible as possible.” the local MP said.
