Blue-green algae has been detected in the region’s waterways.
RED ALERT
The Great Darling Anabranch at the Silver City Highway crossing is on Red Alert for blue-green algae.
AMBER ALERT
The Murray River at Mount Dispersion, Buronga, Merbein, Curlwaa and Fort Courage are on Amber alert for blue-green algae.
The Darling River at upstream Weir 32, Tolarno & Ellerslie are on Amber alert for blue-green algae.
WaterNSW is advising people not to come into contact with untreated river water, and to make alternative arrangements to water pets and livestock while the alert is current. Boiling the water does not inactivate or eliminate algal toxins.
The water should be considered unsuitable for potable use and alternative supplies or prior treatment of raw water for domestic purposes should be considered.
Blue-green algae occurs and can reproduce quickly in still or slow-flowing water when there is abundant sunlight and sufficient nutrients.
