Sunraysia and Mallee locals are being reminded of the dangers associated with hot weather, not just for themselves but also their four-legged companions.
Researchers have found the risk of death in dogs increases by nearly 10% on days when the mercury hits 32 degrees or more, and rises by 1% for each degree over 25 degrees Celsius.
One of Petstock’s Head Vets, Gloria Ebeyer, said it’s an important reminder that summer fun needs a little extra planning when pets are involved, “Dogs love being part of the family, but hot weather can put them in danger. The good news is that with a few simple steps, you can keep them safe and help them enjoy summer just as much as you do.”
Top tips for keeping dogs cool this summer:
● Make water fun: Introduce your dog to paddling pools or short swims so they learn to enjoy cooling down.
● Chill out together: Swap the midday walk for early morning or late evening strolls when the air is cooler.
● Know the danger signs: Keep an eye out for heavy panting, drooling or lethargy – they’re all early warnings of heat stress.
“Summer should be about memories, not mishaps,” said Gloria.
“By making small changes, like timing walks or setting up a splash zone in the backyard, you’ll help your dog stay safe, happy and cool.”
