Mildura Rural City Council have reminded residents that e-waste has been banned from landfills in Victoria since 2019.
The reason for the reminder: Australians will throw away 300 to 400 million electronic waste items into landfills this year.
Up to 90% of the components in these items can be recycled.
Council says that by recycling, we reduce environmental impacts from substances like lead and mercury, and even help lower the cost of future electronics thanks to these recycled materials.
But what exactly counts as electronic waste?
It’s simple – if it has a plug, battery, circuit board or wiring then it’s electronic waste.
E-waste can be recycled through Mildura Landfill, for a fee (based on item size), which helps cover transport costs to the recycling facility in Melbourne.
