The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has announced the Bush Fire Danger Period will commence in the Balranald and Wentworth Shires on 1 October 2026, urging residents and landholders to prepare now as local conditions become drier and temperatures increase.
RFS District Manager Superintendent Steve Walker said the declaration reflects the increasing fire risk across the Lower Western area.
“The Lower Western is experiencing drier conditions as the weather warms, and commencing the Bush Fire Danger Period ensures the community understands the increased risk and takes steps to prepare,” Superintendent Walker said.
“People should use this time to prepare their properties and review their bush fire survival plans.”
During the Bush Fire Danger Period, landowners and managers must obtain a Fire Permit from their local Fire Control Centre before lighting a fire, including fires for hazard reduction.
On Total Fire Ban days, all Bush Fire Hazard Reduction Certificates are automatically suspended.
Regardless of the time of year, anyone planning to light a fire must also notify their neighbours and local fire authorities at least 24 hours before lighting up.

Residents are encouraged to use the lead-up to the Bush Fire Danger Period to prepare their properties, discuss and update their bush fire survival plans, and ensure everyone in their household knows what they will do if threatened by fire.
