Sunraysia Residential Services Inc. (SRS) is urging emergency services, electricity distributors and relevant agencies to strengthen support measures for vulnerable community members following this week’s widespread power outage across Mildura and Merbein.
Twenty-four SRS Supported Accommodation homes, supporting more than 30 participants, remain without power following the outage.
Current estimates indicate some properties may not have electricity restored until Wednesday 23 September at the earliest, creating significant challenges for residents and impacting their wellbeing, independence and quality of life.
SRS’ consulting suite at 877 Fifteenth Street has also been affected, disrupting some operations and services.
Despite these challenges, staff are continuing to work proactively to minimise disruption and maintain essential supports for clients.
SRS CEO Marian Luehman said the outage had highlighted the unique challenges faced by elderly people and people living with disability during emergency situations.
“While power outages are difficult for everyone, they can have a much greater impact on people who rely on electricity to support their daily living, health, safety and independence,” Ms Luehman said.
“Access to generators, alternative accessible accommodation options, transport assistance and targeted welfare checks are all measures that could help ensure vulnerable community members are better supported when incidents like this occur.”
Ms Luehman said SRS would welcome discussions with service providers, emergency agencies and government organisations about how emergency response plans could better recognise and accommodate the needs of vulnerable, elderly and disability communities.
