Former Leading Senior Constable Thomas Kinnane has been awarded a Victoria Police Star, four years after a tragic on-duty collision that left him with serious and permanent injuries and claimed the life of his colleague, Senior Constable Bria Joyce.
Presented by Chief Commissioner Mike Bush on Friday, the award recognises Thomas’s sacrifice and dedication across a policing career spanning more than two decades.
Thomas said receiving the award was an emotional moment.
In receiving the honour, he reflected on the loss of Bria, the challenges of recovery, and the support of the emergency services personnel who responded on the night.
“I am quite honoured to receive the honour of a Police Star, but it is quite an emotional experience to receive such an honour after suffering the loss of Bria and the complex injuries I sustained,” he said.
Victoria Police say they recognise Thomas’ remarkable strength and commitment to service, while remembering Bria and the lasting impact she continues to have on Victoria Police.
