The Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) is calling on road users to take meaningful action today, Fatality Free Friday, uniting communities, workplaces, schools and families across the country to reduce road trauma and save lives.
As Australia records its worst road toll in over a decade – with 1,314 lives lost on Australian roads in 20251 – Fatality Free Friday is encouraging every Australian to recognise that safer choices behind the wheel can prevent tragedy before it happens.
The annual initiative is grounded in a simple but powerful message: if Australia can achieve one day without a road death, we can begin building lasting behavioural change that saves lives every day.
Encouragingly, new ARSF research shows road safety campaigns are helping drive that change.
More than 8 in 10 drivers (83%) say road safety campaigns inspire them to stop taking risks, while nearly all Australians (97%) believe road deaths are preventable if people make safer choices.
However, according to the recent data, just over 7 in 10 (71%) admit to breaking a road law, with speeding, fatigue and mobile phone distraction among the most common risky behaviours.
Australians are being encouraged to take part in Fatality Free Friday by making a personal commitment to safer road behaviour, hosting community events, sharing educational resources and starting conversations about road safety in their homes, schools and workplaces.
Individuals and organisations can learn more or get involved by visiting https://arsf.com.au/ or following ARSF on Instagram (@ausroadsafety) and Facebook (@fatalityfreefriday).
