Man charged after 160km pursuit from Broken Hill

A man has been charged following a 160km pursuit near Broken Hill Saturday night.

Police were conducting roadside breath testing on Menindee Road, Broken Hill, about 10:00pm (Saturday 4 April 2026), when they directed a sedan to stop.

Police will allege the driver ignored the direction and a pursuit was initiated onto the Barrier Highway, with the vehicle reaching speeds of up to 180km/h in a designated 110km/h zone.

The vehicle drove for a further 160km before road spikes were deployed by Wilcannia Police.

The sedan slowed over 5km and stopped before the driver allegedly ran into bush.

A search was conducted, and a 32-year-old man was arrested a short time later.

When the vehicle was checked police found a 34-year-old woman, a 14-year-old girl, and a seven-month-old girl inside.

They were unhurt.

The man was taken to Broken Hill Police Station where he was charged with three offences,

  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
  • Contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic)
