Mallee Family Care has welcomed the cross-party support in state parliament for historic legislation aimed at providing more connected and coordinated support for children in care across the state.
The Children, Youth and Families Amendment (Supporting Stable and Strong Families) Bill 2025 has passed through the Victorian Parliament’s Legislative Assembly and will now move to the Legislative Council.
The Bill introduces a whole‑of‑government approach, where departments such as health, education, housing and community services work together to support vulnerable children, young people and families.
Teresa Jayet, CEO of Mallee Family Care said this builds stronger and more connected support networks for those who need them most.
“Children in care face significant challenges across health, education and housing, and our sector has long called for a coordinated, whole-of-government approach,” Ms Jayet said.
The Bill draws on international success from Scotland’s corporate parenting model, ensuring that when the state undertakes the care of a child, multiple government agencies share responsibility for their wellbeing.
