Wentworth Shire Council have taken to social media with some changes to landfill hours and some tips for the weather in the coming week.
They say the severe heat conditions are forecast across Wentworth Shire for the Australia Day Long Weekend, with temperatures currently forecast to reach up to 48°C next Tuesday, asking the community to plan ahead, stay cool, and look out for one another.
Waste facility hours (Saturday 24 – Tuesday 27 January):
To ensure the safety of our staff and community, operating hours have changed for these dates:
Buronga Landfill:
OPEN: 6:00am – 1:00pm (Early Open/Early Close)
LAST ENTRY: 12:00pm sharp (Strict cutoff to allow for cover/compaction).
Dareton, Wentworth, Ellerslie & Pomona Transfer Stations:
CLOSED completely on these days.
Fire safety & prevention
Mowing/Slashing?
Forget it.
One spark is all it takes.
No Fires: Check RFS for Total Fire Bans.
Travelling?
Have a backup plan.
Breakdowns in this heat are dangerous.
Carry extra water.
Staying safe and cool
Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek an Slide: UV ratings will be extreme.
Check on Mates: Visit vulnerable community members, elderly neighbours, and family.
Stay Hydrated: Water is best.
Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.

Heatstroke is life-threatening. Look for: confusion, lack of sweating, high body temp (>40°C).
