New safe driving data finds phone use spikes on Christmas Day ROLLiN’, an IAG motor insurance brand, has evaluated more than 50 million kms of customer driving data and found that Christmas Day 2024 was the worst day of the year for safe driving.
Phone use is among the factors leading to unsafe driving and increased by 8% on Christmas Day, as detected through ROLLiN’s Safe ‘n Save app.
Phone use is one of the key driving behaviours the ROLLiN’ app assesses, along with speeding, accelerating and hard braking.
With phone use occurring on average one in every 8 car trips nationally, ROLLiN’ Executive Manager, Brendan Griffiths, is calling on all drivers to take greater care during this holiday period when more people are travelling on our roads and connecting with loved ones.
“Our Safe ‘n Save app consistently detects phone use from behind the wheel and shows it was a leading factor in distracted driving last Christmas Day.”
Safe ‘n Save driving behaviour insights by state (November 2025):
• In South Australia drivers use their phone 1 in every 9 car trips
• In the ACT drivers use their phone 1 in every 9 car trips
• In Queensland drivers use their phone 1 in every 8 trips
• In Western Australia drivers use their phone in 1 in every 8 trips
