Mildura Rural City Council is reminding resident to never put fireplace ash in any bin.
Council says even if it looks cold, ash can still contain live embers that can start a fire in:
Your bin and nearby property
Collection trucks
Landfills and waste facilities
How to stay safe:
Let ash cool for at least seven days in a metal container
Store it away from flammables, pets, and children
What do I do with ash (from untreated wood)?
Add to your garden (in small amounts) – ash provides nutrients like calcium
Use in compost – ash helps balance your compost pile
Use for cleaning – ash can help remove soot from fireplace glass or rust
Absorb moisture or spills
Repel pests – ash is a great natural insect deterrent
A remember, ash is NOT accepted at local landfills, transfer stations or Cleanaway compost facilities.
