The Great Darling Anabranch has ceased to flow along its entire length, and the Silver City Highway site on Red Alert remains part of a disconnected residual pool.

Water NSW says these stagnant conditions likely contributed to the high concentrations of blue-green algae recorded at the site.

Blue-green algae can reproduce quickly in still or slow-flowing water when there is abundant sunlight and sufficient nutrients.

All untreated water in the Red Alert area should be considered unsuitable for potable use.

Boiling the water does not inactivate algal toxins.

As algal numbers can change dramatically with changes in conditions, water users should avoid water which is discoloured or gives off an earthy or musty odour.
