An alliance of farmers, environmental groups and First Nations leaders are supporting proposed expanded water buybacks as part of the changes to the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
The Murray Darling Conservation Alliance has stepped up its support of water buybacks, saying it’s the best way to return enough water to the river system.
Meanwhile, New South Wales farmers have rallied in three towns, warning against water buybacks.
Rallies were held yesterday in towns including Deniliquin, with protesters saying any further water buybacks will take water away from agricultural use.
Senators are expected to soon vote on the changes to the plan, which includes the water buybacks, and follows a petition presented to parliament house last week urging the government to stand up and protect rivers.
