Proposed reforms to manage the Murray Darling Basin Plan have been introduced into Federal Parliament.
Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek says the amendments will ensure the plan’s delivered in full, after revelations it would fail to hit its water recovery targets next year.
However Victorian Shadow Water Minister Tim McCurdy says Federal Labor has jeopardised the future of the plan by cutting Victorians out.
The Victorian Farmers Federation has also slammed changes to the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
The farming lobby group says the changes fly in the face of hose the river system’s been managed for years.
However environmental groups are welcoming proposed amendments to the plan.
They welcome the program on the plan, but say any delays will be costly to the health of the river system, and guarantees are needed to make sure real water reaches the rivers.
They say the new bill opens up the potential to recover real water for rivers and wetlands.
