Most of us have a phone or camera full of random photos. We have hundreds of pictures of our pets, a few decent sunsets, and probably some blurry shots of a colourful bird we spotted on a weekend walk. But what if those everyday snaps could actually help save the planet?
September 7, marks National Threatened Species Day. To highlight the occasion, WWF-Australia is launching a brand new project that lets anyone with a camera make a real, positive difference for the environment.
A fun competition with a serious mission
It is called the Photography for Nature Competition, and it is an open invitation for all of us to step outside and capture the beauty of our natural world. Australia is famous globally for its unique animals and breathtaking landscapes, from breaching humpback whales to the quiet beauty of our national parks.
However, the reality behind the scenery is quite concerning. Right now, more than 2,300 Australian plants, animals, and ecosystems are officially threatened with extinction. Just earlier this year, another 34 species were added to that growing list. The main culprits are things we hear about often: habitat destruction, invasive predators, and climate change. The situation is urgent, but that is exactly where your photography skills come in.
Categories for every kind of photographer
You might be thinking that you need expensive equipment and years of professional training to enter. Not at all. The competition is designed for everyone, regardless of age or skill level.
There are categories that cover all the bases. You can submit sweeping shots of wild landscapes, detailed close-ups of local nature in your own neighbourhood, or classic wildlife portraits. There is even a comedy category for those times animals get caught looking a little silly, plus a dedicated youth category to get the younger generation involved in conservation.
How your photos actually help protect wildlife
This is much more than just a chance to show off your favourite pictures online. By participating, you are directly supporting vital conservation efforts. WWF-Australia has set this up so that every single image shared, every public vote cast, and every dollar raised goes directly toward protecting threatened species and restoring their natural habitats. Entries for the competition are officially open from today, September 7, until September 30. Once the submission window closes, the photos will go through exciting public voting rounds. After the public has their say, an expert judging panel will carefully assess the finalists.
The winners will be announced on November 6, and there are some fantastic prizes up for grabs. The overall winner will even have their photograph featured on the cover of WWF-Australia’s 2027 calendar. That is ultimate bragging rights for your kitchen wall!
