Voice cloning scams on the rise |
Sunraysia residents are being warned about ‘voice-cloning’ scams which use AI technology to capture and replicate the voice of friends and family members.
Researchers warn cybercriminals need just three seconds of audio and limited expertise to perpetuate the scam and trick family members and friends into handing over money.
A recent survey found more than 6 in 10 Aussies (62%) say they’ve lost or known someone who has lost money through AI-related voice scams.
Tyler McGee from internet security firm, McAfee says there are several things locals can do to avoid falling victim.
1: Set a verbal ‘codeword’ with kids, family members or trusted close friends that only they could know. Make a plan to always ask for it if they call, text or email to ask for help, particularly if they’re older or more vulnerable.
2: Always question the source – If it’s a call, text or email from an unknown sender, or even if it’s from a number you recognize, stop, pause and think.
3: Think before you click and share – Who is in your social media network? Do you really know and trust them?
