Victorian Nationals leader Peter Walsh has commended his local candidate Jade Benham for taking the seat of Mildura.
With 85 percent of votes counted Benham leads Independent Ali Cupper by just over one thousand votes.
Mr. Walsh says Ms Benham has a track record in Mildura, and the party has progressed and modernised over recent years.

He says the voters of Shepparton and Morwell as well as Mildura sent a clear message to the independents that previously represented them that it was time for a change.
