Residents in South Australia’s Riverland are now being urged to take steps to avoid being bitten by mozzies, after Murray Valley Encephalitis was detected in insects in council areas including Renmark Paringa and Berri/Barmera.
The mosquito-borne virus was detected in Mildura by the council’s monitoring program last week and has also been picked up in Menindee.
Health authorities from both states are urging locals to take necessary steps to avoid being bitten by the insects.
Authorities are worried about the mosquito season, given other viruses are also around including Ross River.
No cases have been reported in humans at this stage, but health authorities from both sides of the border are urging locals to take steps to avoid being bitten.
